Octopus Energy Generation and ZE Energy have announced a joint investment in one of Italy’s largest battery energy storage projects, supporting the country’s efforts to expand renewable energy capacity and strengthen grid resilience.
The Sessa Aurunca project, located in the Campania region of southern Italy, is being developed by ZE Energy and is expected to become the largest standalone battery storage facility in south-central Italy once operational in 2028.
The project forms part of Italy’s wider strategy to increase renewable energy deployment and expand energy storage infrastructure as the country works towards ambitious decarbonisation targets.
Large-scale battery storage to support renewable energy integration
The battery system will be designed to store surplus electricity generated by wind and solar projects and release that energy back to the grid when demand increases.
Energy storage technologies are increasingly viewed as a critical component of modern electricity systems, helping balance supply and demand while reducing renewable energy curtailment.
With a planned capacity of 98.5 MW and 895 MWh, the facility will be capable of storing enough electricity to meet the daily needs of approximately 130,000 homes.
Supporting Italy’s clean energy ambitions
The battery project secured support through Italy’s MACSE energy storage auction programme, operated by national transmission system operator Terna.
According to the project partners, the development accounted for 42% of the awarded storage capacity within its region and secured a fixed 15-year contract.
Italy has set ambitious goals to generate 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 while deploying approximately 10 GW of battery storage capacity to support grid stability.
Growing importance of battery energy storage
As renewable generation continues to expand globally, battery energy storage systems are playing an increasingly important role in enabling higher levels of wind and solar power on electricity networks.
Storage facilities can absorb excess renewable generation during periods of high output and release energy during peak demand periods, helping improve grid flexibility and reliability.
Expanding investment in Italian energy infrastructure
The investment adds to Octopus Energy Generation’s growing portfolio of Italian renewable energy and storage assets.
The company currently has interests in a range of battery storage, wind, solar and rooftop solar developments across the country.
ZE Energy said the project supports its wider strategy to expand battery storage and solar energy deployment across European markets.
