Octopus Energy wind turbine in Cornwall as investment opportunity on The Collective platform sells out in record time
  • Octopus Energy’s latest wind turbine investment opportunity sold out in just over one hour.
  • The Cornwall project raised £550,000 through The Collective investment platform.
  • Almost 180 investors participated, with more than half investing £1,000 or less.
  • The upgraded turbine is expected to generate enough electricity for around 500 homes annually.
  • The project highlights growing public interest in community-backed renewable energy investments.

The Octopus Energy Collective has recorded its fastest sell-out to date after investors snapped up a new Cornwall wind turbine opportunity in just over an hour.

The project raised £550,000 and attracted almost 180 investors, demonstrating growing public appetite for direct participation in renewable energy projects across the UK.

The opportunity was offered through The Collective, the UK’s first FCA-regulated retail investment platform operated by an energy company, allowing people to invest in renewable energy projects from as little as £25.

Strong demand for community renewable energy investment

According to Octopus Energy, more than half of participants invested £1,000 or less, highlighting broad interest from retail investors seeking exposure to renewable energy infrastructure.

The Cornwall project is targeting annual returns of 6.75% over five years, with investors expected to receive their original capital back at the end of the investment term, subject to performance and regulatory conditions.

Investors can choose to receive returns directly or, if they are Octopus Energy customers, have payments credited towards their energy bills.

Repowered wind turbine to generate clean electricity

The project marks the first repowering investment offered through The Collective. Octopus Energy is upgrading an older wind turbine with more efficient technology designed to increase electricity generation and extend the operational life of the asset.

Located in North Cornwall, one of England’s windiest regions, the upgraded 400kW turbine is expected to generate enough renewable electricity each year to power approximately 500 homes.

The company estimates the project will save more than 200 tonnes of carbon emissions annually while also supporting biodiversity through the planting of 400 native trees and plants on the surrounding farmland.

The investment reflects broader growth across the UK’s renewable energy sector, where increasing numbers of consumers are seeking opportunities to participate directly in clean energy projects.

Growing public participation in the energy transition

The Collective launched in 2025 as a platform designed to make renewable energy ownership more accessible. The latest project was also the platform’s first bond-based investment opportunity, allowing eligible investors to hold their investment within an Innovative Finance ISA (IFISA).

Octopus Energy says additional investment opportunities are expected to be launched in the coming months as interest in community-backed renewable energy projects continues to grow.

Zoisa North-Bond, CEO at Octopus Energy Collective, said: “People don’t just want cleaner, cheaper energy – they want to benefit from the energy revolution.

“The Collective gives people the chance to back local green power and share in the rewards, and the fact this latest project sold out in a little over an hour shows how strong the demand is.”
