Limes Renewable Energy has received Environmental Qualification Resolution (RCA) approval for its Pradera Larga hybrid project in Chile’s Valparaíso Region — a milestone that advances the company’s international expansion and strengthens Chile’s long-term renewable energy transition. The approval allows the project to move toward Ready-to-Build status during 2026.

The project combines 84 MWp of solar PV with a 90 MW battery energy storage system (BESS), representing an estimated investment of around US$150 million. Located near Casablanca in Central Chile, Pradera Larga reflects Limes’ strategy to develop renewable assets closer to major demand centres rather than relying solely on generation in the northern regions.

Reducing transmission pressure and supporting Chile’s energy system

Central Chile presents more complex permitting conditions than the northern deserts, but offers significant advantages due to high local electricity demand and limited nearby generation capacity. Developing solar and storage projects closer to load centres can help reduce reliance on long-distance transmission networks — a factor that has created bottlenecks for power purchase agreements (PPAs) in the north.

By positioning Pradera Larga in this region, Limes aims to reduce PPA risk while supporting a more balanced distribution of renewable generation across Chile’s grid.

Progress across Limes’ Chilean pipeline

The approval strengthens Limes’ pipeline in Chile, which now consists of approximately 180 MWp of solar PV and 620 MW of battery storage projects. These include Pradera Larga, BESS Huañil (200 MW), and early-stage developments such as BESS Pimiento (100 MW) and BESS El Ganso (150 MW). The company also recently completed the sale of an early-stage standalone BESS project to a multinational independent power producer.

Over the next year, Limes will progress construction financing, procurement and PPA negotiations for Pradera Larga as it advances toward construction readiness.

Industry perspectives

Martin Libra, Head of LATAM at Limes, said the approval demonstrates the company’s ability to deliver projects in areas with more complex development conditions. “Pradera Larga is a flagship project for Limes in Chile. Reaching this milestone in such a complex area demonstrates our expertise in developing challenging projects and confirms that we are focused on the right locations.”

Managing Director Cristiano Spillati added that the approval reflects the company’s long-term commitment to the Chilean market. “Securing the RCA for Pradera Larga reaffirms our long-term commitment to Chile and reflects the sustained efforts of our local team. We are applying the same strategy that has worked successfully in Italy as we grow our presence across Latin America.”

Global expansion strategy

Limes is headquartered in Milan and active across several high-growth markets including Italy, Sweden, the United States, Chile, Vietnam and Indonesia. The company has a global development pipeline of around 6 GW across solar, wind and battery storage projects.
