Tunley Environmental has launched a sustainability maturity assessment to help organisations gauge how developed their current approach is and identify practical priorities for further work. The company announced the tool on 4 November 2026 in Leeds, UK.
The assessment is aimed at organisations whose sustainability responsibilities cover business strategy, operational performance, supply chains, customer requests for data and reporting requirements. According to the company, organisations can find it difficult to bring these areas together, assess progress consistently and decide which priorities should come next.
Six themes scored in a single report
Respondents answer questions about their existing activities and systems. Their answers are then scored across six themes: business strategy, carbon, circularity, water, nature, and compliance and reporting.
Tunley Environmental describes the assessment as a structured starting point for organisations that want an overview of their position before deciding on next steps.
What the sustainability maturity assessment provides
The results include an overall percentage score and a maturity level, graded as Basic, Developing, Established or Leading. Each of the six themes also receives its own score and maturity rating.
The output also includes:
- an overview of the organisation’s highest-scoring theme and the theme with the greatest scope for development
- three strengths, based on the organisation’s submitted answers
- three priority gaps, each with a corresponding recommended action
- relevant services where specialist support may be useful
The findings are compiled in a personalised report, signed off by Tunley’s scientists, which the company said is designed to support internal discussion and planning.
Handling uncertain and unverified answers
The questionnaire recognises when an answer is uncertain or unverified. According to the company, this helps organisations distinguish between activity that has not been undertaken and information that still needs to be confirmed.
Recommendations are mapped to the submitted responses. Tunley Environmental said this is intended to keep the resulting action plan proportionate to the organisation’s current position.
Dr William Beer, CEO and founder of Tunley Environmental, said: “Businesses often know that sustainability is important but can struggle to see where their current approach is strongest and where limited time and resources should be focused next. The Sustainability Maturity Assessment is designed to give them a structured starting point.”
He added: “By bringing strategy, carbon, circularity, water, nature and compliance together in one report, the assessment helps organisations work towards prioritised initiatives that reflect their organisation’s sustainability requirements.”
A diagnostic rather than an audit
The company states that the tool assesses organisational maturity and is not an audit, certification or independent verification exercise. Its score reflects the responses submitted by the organisation.
As a result, Tunley Environmental said the score should not be treated as a direct measure of environmental performance, legal compliance or achieved impact.
How organisations can use the results
According to the company, organisations can use the report to support internal conversations and compare progress across the six themes. It can also help them consider which actions are most relevant to customer expectations, reporting needs, existing targets and available team capacity.
Where organisations need further support, Tunley scientists can discuss suitable next steps separately. The assessment is available on the Tunley Environmental website.
