  • Burckhardt Compression has been selected by HYDS for Nordic hydrogen projects.
  • The systems are designed to compress hydrogen up to 515 bar.
  • The compression will support high-pressure tube trailer filling.
  • HYDS is developing renewable hydrogen projects for maritime, mobility and industrial users.
  • Final deliveries remain subject to customary agreements.

Burckhardt Compression has been selected by Hydrogen Solutions AS (HYDS) to supply high-pressure hydrogen compression solutions for Nordic renewable hydrogen projects with expected production capacities of 20 MW to 40 MW when operational.

The scope includes compression systems capable of reaching pressures of up to 515 bar, enabling hydrogen to be filled into high-pressure tube trailers for onward transport and distribution.

The companies said trailer filling infrastructure will be important in the early development of hydrogen markets, where pipeline infrastructure remains limited and producers need flexible routes to move hydrogen from production sites to customers.

The projects are being developed by HYDS with regional energy and industrial partners and are expected to use renewable electricity. The hydrogen produced is intended to support maritime, mobility and industrial applications across the Nordic region.

“Hydrogen distribution is a critical enabler of a successful hydrogen economy,” said Andreas Brautsch, President Systems Division at Burckhardt Compression. “Our technology allows hydrogen to be compressed safely and efficiently to 515 bar for trailer filling applications, providing HYDS with a reliable solution to transport renewable hydrogen from production sites to customers. We are proud to support landmark projects and the expansion of hydrogen infrastructure in the Nordics.”

Hydrogen compression supports trailer-based distribution

Hydrogen compression is a key part of the transport chain because hydrogen must be pressurised before it can be moved efficiently in tube trailers or used in refuelling and industrial applications.

For early hydrogen projects, trailers can provide a more flexible distribution model than fixed pipeline infrastructure. This can allow producers to serve multiple customers while demand is still developing and while permanent hydrogen networks remain limited.

Burckhardt Compression said its reciprocating compressor technology is designed for high-pressure hydrogen applications, including production, storage, transportation and refuelling.

HYDS project pipeline expands in Norway

HYDS develops, builds and operates local green hydrogen production facilities. Its project pipeline includes the 20 MW HyFuel project in Florø and the Kaupanes Hydrogen expansion in Egersund, both of which reached final investment decision in November 2025, according to HYDS.

The HyFuel project is planned at Fjord Base in Florø, while the Kaupanes expansion is expected to scale an existing hydrogen production site in Egersund. HYDS has said the projects are designed to support maritime, transport, construction and industrial hydrogen users across Norway and the wider Nordic region.

“Building a hydrogen production plant is about much more than installing equipment. The quality, reliability and competence of our suppliers have a direct impact on plant performance, project risk, safety and long-term value creation,” said Frode Kirkedam, CEO of HYDS.

“For this reason, we allocate considerable resources in selecting the right partners who not only deliver proven technology, but who also share our commitment to quality, communication and continuous support throughout the plant lifetime.”

Agreement still subject to finalisation

The companies did not disclose financial terms. Burckhardt Compression said execution of the deliveries remains subject to the finalisation of customary agreements between the two companies.

The announcement adds to wider momentum around hydrogen infrastructure, where compression, storage, testing and distribution systems are increasingly seen as essential to scaling low-carbon hydrogen beyond pilot projects.

Recent Climate Global News coverage has looked at hydrogen testing infrastructure and hydrogen production technology as the sector works to reduce cost, improve reliability and strengthen safety standards.

FAQs

What has Burckhardt Compression been selected to supply?

Burckhardt Compression has been selected to supply high-pressure hydrogen compression solutions for HYDS projects in the Nordics, with systems capable of reaching up to 515 bar.

Why does hydrogen need to be compressed?

Hydrogen has low volumetric energy density, so it is commonly compressed to high pressure for storage, trailer transport and refuelling applications.

What is trailer filling in hydrogen distribution?

Trailer filling involves compressing hydrogen into high-pressure tube trailers so it can be transported by road from production sites to customers.

Are the Burckhardt and HYDS deliveries final?

The companies said execution of the deliveries is subject to the finalisation of customary agreements.
