Volvo Trucks has introduced a new stop/start engine feature that allows its heavy-duty trucks to temporarily shut off the engine under certain driving conditions, cutting both fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. The innovation, integrated into Volvo’s I-Roll system, marks a world first for long-haul trucks.
When travelling downhill or in situations where the vehicle’s momentum is sufficient, the engine automatically stops and restarts seamlessly when power is needed again. This can save up to one percent additional fuel on top of existing efficiency technologies—small in percentage terms but significant across global fleets.
Jessica Sandström, Senior Vice President of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, said: “We continuously push for improvements that help customers reduce operating costs and environmental impact. This new functionality takes fuel efficiency to the next level and brings us closer to a more sustainable transport system.”
The new stop/start feature will be available globally across select heavy-duty models in 2026, complementing Volvo’s ongoing investments in battery-electric, fuel cell, and renewable fuel solutions.
