Octopus Energy has built its 10,000th Cosy heat pump, three years after setting up its factory in Portadown, Northern Ireland. The company announced the milestone in London on 15 October, during National Heat Pump Week.
On the same day, TIME Magazine named the Octopus Cosy 12 one of the Best Inventions of 2026. Previous winners include the Apple iPhone (2007), the Dyson Air Multiplier (2009) and the Tesla Model S (2012).
Octopus Energy is a clean energy and technology business. According to the company, it supplies 11 million households and has operations in 27 countries, as well as heat pump, solar and EV leasing businesses.
Three sizes and a high-temperature design
Octopus Energy says Cosy is designed to make switching from a gas boiler as simple as possible. It comes in three sizes, 6kW, 9kW and 12kW, to suit properties ranging from small houses to large family homes.
The company says the heat pump’s high-temperature design needs fewer, and often no, changes to existing radiators and pipework. This makes installation quicker and cheaper. Each unit is built by Octopus Energy’s in-house staff to exceed MCS industry standards. The heat pumps also update themselves remotely to unlock new features over time.
Tariff savings and emissions
When Cosy is paired with the Cosy Octopus tariff, smart algorithms schedule a home’s heating and hot water into three cheap off-peak windows a day. According to Octopus Energy, households on the tariff save an average of £230 a year compared with a standard gas boiler.
That figure rises to nearly £350 for households that stop using gas completely and no longer pay the gas standing charge. The company says these homes also cut their carbon emissions by over 80%.
Demand and customer satisfaction
Octopus Energy says 570,000 people have contacted it about getting a heat pump in the past 18 months. That is equivalent to roughly a third of the annual gas boiler replacement market.
The company surveyed 1,820 customers with either a heat pump or a gas boiler between 5 and 8 January 2026. Among the customers surveyed, 9 out of 10 (89%) said they were satisfied with their heat pump.
Climate Global News has previously reported on homeowner interest in Octopus heat pumps and on performance and cost differences between heat pumps and gas boilers in the UK.
Cosy Cooler adds summer cooling
The milestone follows the launch of Cosy Cooler, a device that turns a Cosy heat pump into a home cooling system. It allows homes with a Cosy to be cooled in summer as well as heated in winter, without a separate air-conditioning unit.
Role of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
Octopus Energy said the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) has played an important role in getting the market moving and making innovations like Cosy possible. The scheme helps households with the cost of installing a heat pump.
Greg Jackson, Founder and CEO of Octopus Energy, said: “Ten thousand Cosy heat pumps means ten thousand homes with a better, cheaper way to heat – and every single one was built by our brilliant team in Northern Ireland.
“Half a million people have asked us about heat pumps in the last 18 months, and the ones who’ve switched love them.
“The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has helped get us here. We need to keep backing it so heat pumps can scale further and soon become affordable without subsidy – and the way to get there is by growing the market, not pulling support away too soon.”
