OMRON Electronic Components Europe has launched two new G3VH silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET relays designed for high-voltage power switching in electrification, renewable energy and industrial applications.

The new devices, rated at 3,300V and 1,800V, enable reliable switching in systems operating at bus and battery voltages of up to 1,000V and beyond. The company says the relays are intended to support engineers developing more efficient, lightweight electrical systems by enabling higher operating voltages while reducing wiring size and associated losses.

The relays are suited to applications including industrial automation, motor drives, solar and wind power generation, energy storage systems (ESS) and automated test equipment (ATE) used for high-voltage semiconductor testing.

Designed for faster, more efficient switching

The G3VH series incorporates back-to-back silicon carbide MOSFETs with an optically isolated gate driver inside a compact six-pin dual inline package (DIP-6). OMRON says the devices benefit from low internal capacitance, enabling efficient switching with turn-on times of between 1 ms and 2 ms and turn-off times of just 0.2 ms.

The company notes that this performance allows faster response to safety commands while reducing testing cycle times in automated manufacturing environments.

Silicon carbide technology also offers improved tolerance to high dV/dt conditions and elevated operating temperatures compared with conventional silicon-based relays, supporting long operational life in demanding industrial environments.

Two models available

OMRON has introduced two product families within the new range.

The G3VH-331 is rated for 3,300V, supporting continuous load currents of up to 300mA and pulse currents of 900mA, with a total on-resistance of 3.5Ω.

The G3VH-181 is rated for 1,800V and supports continuous currents of up to 30mA and pulse currents of 80mA, with an on-resistance of 120Ω.

Both relay series are normally open (SPST Type 1a) devices and are available in surface-mount and through-hole package options.

Supporting electrification across industries

As industries continue increasing operating voltages to improve efficiency and reduce system weight, silicon carbide switching technologies are becoming increasingly important across electrification programmes.

OMRON says the new G3VH relay family has been developed to meet these requirements while providing compact, reliable solid-state switching for renewable energy, industrial automation and high-voltage power applications.
