Marine wildlife awareness accreditation scheme support from South West Water is set to expand training for coastal businesses in North Devon, focusing on reducing human impact on marine ecosystems.
The initiative, delivered by the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere, provides education and accreditation for businesses operating in marine environments, encouraging sustainable practices and improved awareness of local wildlife.
The programme will reach more than 500 businesses over the next two years, targeting sectors such as tourism, water sports, and coastal services.
Marine wildlife awareness accreditation scheme supports coastal sustainability
The marine wildlife awareness accreditation scheme is designed to help businesses understand how their activities affect marine species, including seals, dolphins and seabirds. By promoting responsible behaviour, the initiative aims to reduce disturbance to wildlife and protect fragile habitats.
Training sessions are delivered across North Devon and focus on practical guidance, helping organisations adapt their operations to minimise environmental impact while maintaining commercial activity.
The region forms part of the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere, recognised for its ecological diversity and role in supporting biodiversity and climate resilience.
Balancing tourism and marine conservation
Coastal tourism plays a significant role in local economies, but increased activity can place pressure on sensitive marine ecosystems. Disturbance from boats, water sports, and coastal development can affect wildlife behaviour and habitat stability.
The marine wildlife awareness accreditation scheme aims to address this challenge by aligning tourism activity with conservation objectives. Businesses that complete the programme can demonstrate their commitment to sustainable practices, supporting more responsible visitor experiences.
By improving awareness and encouraging behavioural change, the initiative contributes to broader efforts to protect marine biodiversity while maintaining economic activity in coastal regions.
Funding from South West Water’s Better Futures Fund supports the expansion of the programme, enabling wider participation and long-term impact across the region.
