Expanding into the UK circular economy
Founded in Vienna, Refurbed has established itself as a European market leader in the refurbished electronics sector. The company’s entry into the UK – one of Europe’s largest and most digitally advanced markets – represents a major milestone in its growth strategy.
In the UK, demand for sustainable technology is rising fast, yet the market still lacks reliable and high-quality refurbished options. Refurbed estimates there are over 100 million unused mobile phones in drawers across the country, with around 33 million suitable for restoration and reuse – a huge opportunity to bring devices back into the circular economy.
Strong financial and environmental performance
Refurbed achieved a series of major financial milestones in 2025, delivering double-digit EBITDA profitability and becoming cash-flow positive in March. The company now targets gross merchandise value (GMV) of nearly £860 million for FY2025.
“This was another exceptional year,” said Peter Windischhofer, co-founder and CEO of Refurbed. “Profitability in March, 40 per cent year-on-year sales growth, and leveraging AI across our revenue-generation machine all fuelled our expansion plans. We proved that doing good and doing well aren’t opposites – they’re the same playbook. Now is the time to make refurbished mainstream.”
Paco Riberas of Orilla added: “We are excited to back Refurbed as they continue to lead the refurbished category in Europe. Our investment aligns with our values of promoting more responsible consumption. Their combination of growth, profitability, and strong partnerships uniquely positions them for long-term success.”
Scaling impact through sustainable tech
To date, Refurbed has processed over 9 million devices and served 4 million customers across 12 European markets. As a market leader in Germany and Austria, the company’s growth has delivered measurable environmental results – saving 350,000 tonnes of CO₂, 1,136 tonnes of electronic waste, and 116 billion litres of water.
As the UK moves forward with its Net Zero goals, Right to Repair legislation, and e-waste reduction targets, Refurbed aims to support these national priorities while helping consumers make smarter, more sustainable technology choices.
