Ed Matthew, UK Programme Director at E3G, said:
“The gas price crisis since the Russian invasion of Ukraine has cost every UK household thousands of pounds in higher energy bills. The only solution to get off the gas price rollercoaster is to get off gas.
Our research shows that it is possible for the government to reach its 2030 clean power target whilst reducing electricity bills by more than £200. But that requires urgent action by government to implement cost-cutting policies, including moving levies off electricity bills into the Exchequer. We need the Chancellor to announce this at the Budget.
Staying hooked on gas just puts UK households and the UK economy at the mercy of dictators like Putin.”
Background
E3G’s analysis has consistently shown that accelerating clean-energy deployment is the most effective way to cut household costs, improve energy security and meet climate commitments. Retaining the 2030 Clean Power Target would help to stabilise prices, attract investment and deliver lower-cost renewable power across the UK grid.
The think tank is urging the government to reaffirm its 2030 commitment in the forthcoming Budget and take immediate steps to reduce the cost burden of the energy transition on consumers.
