  • The ranking is based on peer assessment by executives, analysts and City commentators across 13 reputation criteria.

  • Octopus topped the list ahead of long-established firms including Airbus, Marks & Spencer and Rolls-Royce.

  • The company also received multiple sector awards linked to strategy, management quality and environmental impact.

Energy supplier Octopus Energy has been named Britain’s Most Admired Company 2025, becoming the youngest organisation to receive the title since the rankings were established 35 years ago.

The award was presented at a ceremony hosted by the London Stock Exchange and places Octopus at the top of the UK’s longest-running corporate reputation survey.

Peer-reviewed corporate reputation rankings

Britain’s Most Admired Companies is run by market research agency Echo Research in partnership with the London Stock Exchange. The annual study assesses the reputations of more than 250 major UK companies across 28 industry sectors.

Companies are evaluated against 13 criteria, including strategic clarity, quality of management, innovation, contribution to society and environmental performance.

For the 2025 rankings, more than 350 interviews were conducted with board-level executives, financial analysts and City commentators between July and October 2025, meaning companies are assessed by peers and competitors rather than the public.

Energy sector performance

In addition to taking the overall top position, Octopus Energy secured the gold sector award for Energy Distribution and Supply for the third consecutive year.

The company also received gold awards in several cross-sector categories, including clarity of strategy, effective use of corporate assets, positive contribution to society and reducing environmental impact. Further recognition included shared gold for quality of management and silver awards for talent development and innovation capacity.

Octopus was the only privately held company to place within the overall top ten, ranking ahead of Airbus, Marks & Spencer and Rolls-Royce.

Leadership and sector context

The rankings reflect a period of significant change in the UK energy sector, where affordability, resilience and decarbonisation remain central challenges. Corporate reputation assessments increasingly factor in how companies respond to these pressures, alongside governance and operational performance.

Dame Julia Hoggett, Chief Executive Officer of the London Stock Exchange, said the award recognised leadership at the intersection of energy transition and economic resilience.

Sandra Macleod, Group Chief Executive Officer at Echo Research, said the results signalled a high level of trust from business peers and market commentators.

Founded in 2015, Octopus Energy has grown rapidly in the UK and internationally. The company’s position at the top of the 2025 rankings highlights how newer entrants can compete with established firms on reputation as well as scale.
