nstitution of Civil Engineers says biggest decarbonisation challenge is ‘staying the course’

In response to the Climate Change Committee’s Progress Report, published today, the Institution of Civil Engineers director of policy and external affairs, Sam Gould said:

“While the UK still needs to keep moving towards net zero, there are several positives in today’s Climate Change Committee’s Progress Report.

“The 2030 target is said to be in reach, the CCC has acknowledged policy developments like the removal of planning barriers, and transport emissions, excluding air, are down for the second year in a row.

“The biggest challenge is now staying the course. Significant progress has been made to decarbonise the electricity system. Now, other sectors must ramp up their efforts to create lasting change.

“There are still obstacles to overcome. Electricity costs need to be reduced to make things like heat pumps more attractive, but there are also opportunities. Among them, growing a skilled workforce to roll out the transition and sparking overall economic growth.”
