Costain has announced the appointment of Peter Mumford as managing director of its natural resources division. Mumford will also join Costain’s Executive Board when he takes up the role on 2 January 2026.

With more than 20 years of experience in complex engineering, programme management and consultancy, Mumford brings a broad range of expertise from both the private and public sectors. He joins from Balfour Beatty, where he was managing director of its UK regional civils business, and previously held senior roles at Highways England, Aecom, EC Harris and Turner & Townsend.

At Costain, he will be responsible for driving growth across the natural resources division, which focuses on delivering best-in-class infrastructure in water, energy and defence. The division recently reported a 7.3% increase in revenue, supported by several major contract wins.

Supporting a more resilient, low-carbon future

Costain’s natural resources business has secured long-term partnerships across critical national infrastructure, including a 15-year, billion-pound utilities upgrade contract at Sellafield, decommissioning work at Trawsfynydd nuclear power station in North Wales, and a five-year extension with EDF for project controls services across the UK.

Alex Vaughan, Costain’s chief executive, said: “Our natural resources division continues to grow from strength to strength and is delivering best-in-class infrastructure services in the nationally critical markets of water, energy and defence. Peter’s leadership experience will help us continue to deliver infrastructure for a more prosperous, resilient and decarbonised future.”

Peter Mumford added: “Costain’s reputation and heritage are second to none. I’m excited to join at this time and contribute to its strong track record in delivering essential, complex infrastructure. My focus will be on building long-term strategic partnerships and broadening our services to help drive sustainable growth.”
