  • Atos has been selected by EDF for a strategic partnership of up to 15 years covering EDF’s international EPR export projects.
  • Atos will develop an Operations Information Management System (OIMS) intended to act as the digital backbone of nuclear power plants.
  • The platform will combine operational data, maintenance and business processes to support the efficiency, safety and resilience of nuclear operations.
  • Atos said it will build a scalable, standardised and replicable OIMS model for the growing number of new nuclear programmes outside France.
  • Cybersecurity, operational resilience and control are to be placed at the core of the OIMS design.

Atos has been selected by EDF for a strategic partnership of up to 15 years to develop an Operations Information Management System (OIMS) for EDF’s EPR export projects. The partnership, announced in London on 20 October 2026, focuses on new nuclear projects outside France.

The OIMS is intended to support the operations and maintenance of nuclear plants once they are in service. Atos said the partnership is also aimed at developing an industrialised approach to managing data, business processes and activities during the operating phase of nuclear facilities.

A digital backbone for nuclear power plants

The companies describe the OIMS as the digital backbone of a nuclear power plant. The platform will bring together operational data, maintenance and business processes, with the aim of improving efficiency, safety and resilience across nuclear operations.

Atos said it will develop a scalable, standardised and replicable OIMS model that can be used for the growing number of new nuclear programmes outside France. The company said the model is intended to help establish a new benchmark for nuclear operations management globally.

The partnership combines EDF’s experience as a nuclear operator with Atos’ work in critical systems, complex platform integration, industrial data management, cybersecurity and the convergence of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT).

Expected benefits for plant operators

According to Atos, the expected benefits of the OIMS platform include:

  • improved cost control, planning accuracy and risk management during the operating phase;
  • more efficient operations and maintenance, with reduced downtime and better optimised maintenance cycles;
  • greater equipment reliability and safety through better data consistency, traceability and anticipation of potential failures;
  • data-driven decision-making across the plant lifecycle;
  • support for change management and user adoption when new processes are introduced;
  • avoiding obsolescence by guaranteeing interoperability.

Turnkey offer for EPR export projects

EDF said the arrangement will give international clients of its EPR export projects a ready-to-use operating system from the point at which a plant is handed over. EDF’s clients will also be able to draw on Atos’ global footprint and partner network, which the companies said would support local activity and economic development.

“This partnership will enable international clients of EDF’s EPR export projects to benefit from a comprehensive, turnkey solution, providing them with the tools they need to operate their nuclear power plant from the moment it is handed over. This integrated approach ensures seamless digital continuity of data throughout the entire lifecycle of the plant, from design and construction through to operation,” said Xavier Ursat, group senior executive vice president in charge of strategy, technologies, innovation and development at EDF.

Cybersecurity built into the design

Operational safety, data integrity and system availability are fundamental requirements in the nuclear industry, where systems must withstand increasingly sophisticated cyber threats while maintaining business continuity. EDF and Atos said cybersecurity, operational resilience and control will be at the core of the OIMS design.

The platform is intended to meet the highest standards for data protection, traceability, regulatory compliance and risk management, the companies said.

New nuclear build and the role of digital systems

The partnership comes as governments and industry invest in new nuclear capacity to address security of supply and carbon reduction goals, against a background of growing energy demand and accelerating electrification.

“The global revival of nuclear energy calls for new approaches capable of combining industrial excellence, risk management, security and program acceleration. They will also depend on our ability to further integrate data, processes, and technologies in support of industrial performance. By bringing together EDF’s unique operational expertise and Atos’ capabilities in critical systems, industrial data, cybersecurity, we are laying the foundations for a next-generation platform designed to support the nuclear programs of the future,” said Franck Chartier, executive vice president and head of Atos France.

Atos is the digital services brand of Atos Group, which is listed on Euronext Paris and also operates the Eviden brand for products and systems. Atos has more than 52,000 employees serving over 4,500 clients across 54 countries, and the company said it has supported operators of critical infrastructure in the energy and utilities sector for several decades.

Climate Global News has previously reported on the use of digital technologies in industrial maintenance, including RS’s Industry in Motion maintenance engineering report produced with IMechE.
