The Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES) has appointed qualified teacher Rachel Hames as its new education outreach manager, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to developing the next generation of skilled professionals in the built environment.
Rachel, who joins from a background in primary education and STEM outreach, will lead engagement with schools, colleges and universities to promote careers in civil engineering surveying — a sector that plays a vital role in supporting sustainable infrastructure and climate-resilient development.
Working alongside Dominic Lane, development manager at CICES, Rachel’s role will focus on expanding awareness of the skills needed to deliver a net-zero and environmentally responsible construction industry. The initiative aligns with the presidential theme of Alexandra (Alex) Pearsall, who recently began her term leading the institution under the banner ‘Shaping the Future of Construction’.
Dominic said:
We are delighted to have Rachel join us and believe she will be a great asset to the team. Her background in education will be instrumental in helping us both influence and approach the education sector. Having a new, dedicated resource in this area will also support us in driving new memberships.
Rachel added:

Rachel Hames, new education outreach manager at CICES
I’m excited to join the team at CICES and look forward to using the skills I’ve gained from my background in education in this new role, while also highlighting the benefits of CICES membership. I am passionate about inclusivity, and with diversity and inclusion being one of CICES’s golden threads, I’m proud to align myself with an organisation that prioritises these values.
Established in 1969, CICES is an international professional body for civil engineering surveyors, specialising in geospatial engineering and commercial management. Its educational outreach aims to inspire future professionals to help shape a sustainable and inclusive construction sector.
