PepsiCo has published its 2024 ESG Summary, highlighting advances in regenerative agriculture, renewable energy, water stewardship, packaging reduction and nutrition. The company said it has already surpassed two of its 2025 nutrition targets, while continuing to embed sustainability across its operations. The report also reflects PepsiCo’s revised goals, updated earlier in 2024 to align with the latest science and strengthen long-term business resilience.
Key progress in 2024
- Agriculture: Regenerative, restorative, or protective practices were spread across 3.5 million acres, with a goal of 10 million acres by 2030.
- Climate: 89% of electricity needs for company-owned operations were sourced from renewable sources (around 3,900 GWh), with an 18% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared with 2022.
- Water: Approximately 24 billion litres of water were replenished into local watersheds, representing 75% of the water used in high-risk manufacturing locations. Since 2006, PepsiCo has supported access to safe water for more than 96 million people.
- Packaging: Virgin plastic use in primary packaging was reduced by 5% between 2023 and 2024, with recycled plastic making up 15% of packaging in key markets.
- Nutrition: Ahead of schedule, 67% of beverage volume now contains fewer than 100 calories from added sugars per 12 oz serving, and 77% of convenient foods do not exceed 1.3 mg of sodium per calorie.
Embedding sustainability
The ESG Summary reports progress across the company’s three pep+ pillars: Positive Agriculture, Positive Value Chain, and Positive Choices. PepsiCo said the revised goals are focused on areas where the company believes it can have the most positive impact.
Ramon Laguarta, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PepsiCo, said pep+ represents a transformation across the company’s operations, from production to distribution. He added that the programme aims to build resilience while addressing systemic barriers to sustainability.
Jim Andrew, Executive Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer, commented: “Our progress in 2024 shows that when we embed sustainability into the heart of our company, we not only strengthen communities and the planet, we also make our business more resilient. The journey will not always be linear, and systemic challenges require greater collaboration between business, governments, and civil society.”
