The Greater Peoria Sanitary District (GPSD) has finalised agreements with Burnham RNG to capture methane produced at its treatment facilities and convert it into renewable natural gas (RNG). The initiative is designed to cut greenhouse gas emissions and create a sustainable energy source from wastewater treatment byproducts.Methane is a potent greenhouse gas and a natural result of wastewater treatment. By capturing and repurposing it as RNG, GPSD is seeking to reduce emissions while adding long-term value for the community. The project will contribute to renewable energy production and support regional energy resilience.Brian Johnson, executive director of GPSD, said the development highlights the importance of turning unavoidable waste streams into resources. Chris Tynan, founder of Burnham RNG, added that the collaboration demonstrates how utilities and private sector partners can work together to deliver cleaner energy solutions. The partnership reflects a broader trend of utilities investing in circular energy systems that reduce reliance on fossil fuels while strengthening community sustainability goals.
