Nexans has been selected as preferred supplier by Red Eléctrica for the Mallorca-Menorca 3 interconnection project, a new 132 kV high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) cable link between the two Balearic islands. The company announced the selection in Paris on 22 October 2026. The Mallorca-Menorca interconnection is intended to strengthen the security and resilience of electricity supply in the Balearic Islands.
Six-month engineering phase ahead of EPCI contract
Under the terms of the tender launched by Red Eléctrica, execution of the agreement will initiate a six-month collaborative engineering phase. This phase is designed to lay the foundation for a future EPCI (engineering, procurement, construction and installation) contract.
Signature of the EPCI contract and the start of project delivery are expected in mid-2027. During the engineering phase, Nexans will carry out engineering activities for a cable system incorporating both subsea and land cable infrastructure.
Reducing Menorca’s reliance on fossil fuel generation
The project represents the next stage in the development of the electrical connection between Mallorca and Menorca. According to Nexans, once the link is delivered, Menorca will significantly reduce its dependency on fossil fuel electricity generation.
The company said the new connection will support the long-term reliability and stability of the regional power system. Red Eléctrica is the subsidiary of Redeia responsible for electricity transmission and the operation of Spain’s power systems.
Building on the existing Mallorca-Menorca interconnection
The new link builds on Nexans’ previous contribution to the existing electrical connection between the two islands. The company said the project further strengthens its long-standing collaboration with Red Eléctrica.
Nexans said the scope draws on its experience delivering complex interconnection projects and its established presence in the region. The project will use the company’s engineering, manufacturing and installation capabilities.
Nexans said particular attention will be given to environmental stewardship during project planning and execution, reflecting the ecological sensitivity of the project area.
Company comment
Pascal Radue, EVP of PWR-Transmission at Nexans, said: “Nexans is proud to have been selected by Red Eléctrica for this strategic project.”
He added: “The Mallorca-Menorca interconnection is an important infrastructure investment that will help reinforce network resilience and support the energy transition in the Balearic Islands. This agreement reflects the confidence placed in Nexans’ end-to-end capabilities and our track record in delivering reliable and sustainable electrification solutions.”
Nexans’ wider cable business
Nexans, which is listed on Euronext Paris, operates in 39 countries with 12,830 people. It reported €6.1 billion in standard sales in 2025. Its activities are organised into three businesses: PWR Transmission, PWR Grid and PWR Connect.
The company has committed to net-zero emissions by 2050 in line with the Science Based Targets initiative. Climate Global News has previously reported on Nexans’ subsea cable work elsewhere in Europe, including the start of 525 kV HVDC cable production with TenneT for the LanWin2 offshore grid link.
