EDF and Kraken have launched a new phase of their flexibility partnership, enabling millions of households to cut energy costs by shifting electricity use to periods when power is cleaner and cheaper. The system uses Kraken’s AI-powered platform to automatically optimise consumption from residential technologies such as electric vehicles, heat pumps, home batteries and solar systems.

More than 1,000 customer devices totalling over 7 MW of flexible capacity are already connected, only a few months into the programme. As the rollout expands, EDF expects its 5 million customers to gain access to additional savings and improved control over their energy consumption.

Smarter energy use for EVs, heating and home storage

The new flexibility offering enables participating households to shift electricity use automatically. For EV drivers, this means charging during low-cost, low-carbon periods, which EDF says could save hundreds of pounds per year compared with conventional home charging. The system also supports wider grid stability by reducing pressure during peak times.

Kraken’s platform manages more than 2 GW of flexible capacity globally, representing one of the largest aggregations of residential energy assets. The platform acts as a virtual power plant by coordinating power flows across hundreds of thousands of devices.

Deepening an existing partnership

The cooperation between EDF and Kraken builds on previous integration work that saw 7.9 million meter points migrated from 17 legacy systems to the Kraken platform between 2020 and 2022. EDF reports that customer service metrics and employee satisfaction have improved since the transition.

Both organisations are founding members of the Mercury Consortium, an initiative developing a universal standard for smart energy device interoperability.

Industry perspectives

Richard Hughes, Director of Retail at EDF, said the partnership supports the expansion of flexible, low-carbon energy use in homes. “This partnership with Kraken extends our mission into homes across the UK, combining EDF’s energy expertise with world-class technology to make smart, low-carbon living simpler and more affordable. Together, we’re turning flexibility into real savings and driving progress toward a net zero system.”

Devrim Celal, Chief Flexibility & Marketing Officer at Kraken, added that the collaboration builds on several years of joint work. “After years of successful partnership, we are happy to deepen our relationship by expanding Kraken’s support within EDF’s growing and exciting business. We are excited to be the foundation of this next phase of EDF’s success.”
