CEVA Logistics has partnered with Avolta to launch a pilot sustainable road transport model in Spain. The initiative combines high-capacity Duo Trailer vehicles with renewable hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel to cut emissions on one of Europe’s busiest freight corridors.

The project is currently running on the Barcelona–Madrid route, where the companies estimate it will reduce annual emissions by up to 520 tonnes of CO₂ and 180 kilograms of nitrogen oxides. According to CEVA, the savings are equivalent to removing around 440 trucks from the road each year.

Innovating for efficiency and emissions reduction

Duo Trailers, which consist of two standard articulated trailers linked together, enable the transport of greater cargo volumes in a single journey. When combined with renewable HVO, the vehicles provide a scalable option for reducing road freight emissions without requiring significant infrastructure changes.

The pilot programme highlights a growing push within the logistics sector to deliver immediate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions while longer-term electrification and hydrogen options continue to scale up.

Driving sustainable logistics

The collaboration reflects CEVA Logistics’ wider strategy to embed sustainability across its operations and aligns with Avolta’s focus on minimising environmental impact while maintaining efficiency. Both companies said the model has the potential to expand across other routes in Spain and Europe if the pilot proves successful.
