Agreena has introduced its Carbon Credit Confidence Initiative, aimed at improving transparency and accountability across the soil carbon credit sector. The programme brings together traceable data, independent verification, and community engagement to address long-standing concerns about integrity in carbon markets.

Addressing trust challenges in carbon credits

Polling commissioned by Agreena shows that 62% of stakeholders find it difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of carbon credit projects, particularly those linked to nature-based solutions such as soil carbon. The new initiative seeks to provide greater clarity by setting out how credits are generated, measured, and verified.

Main elements of the programme

  • On-farm visits: Stakeholders will have the opportunity to observe regenerative agriculture practices first-hand, following the process from data collection through to credit issuance.
  • Standards alignment: The AgreenaCarbon Project operates under the Verra Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) VM0042 methodology, recognised internationally for its rigour.
  • Baseline accuracy: Each enrolled field applies five years of historical data to establish credible soil carbon baselines.
  • Measurement and modelling: Soil sampling, farmer reporting, and scientific modelling are combined annually to quantify carbon sequestration.
  • Independent oversight: Third-party audits and data verification ensure each credit represents a measurable climate benefit.
  • Regional traceability: Credits are linked to specific European regions, offering transparency from field to market.

Industry perspective

Simon Haldrup, CEO of Agreena, commented:

Carbon markets hold enormous potential, but trust is paramount. By combining real-world evidence, cutting-edge technology, and global accreditation standards, Agreena is bridging the confidence gap for farmers and corporates alike.

Potential impacts

  • Helping companies gain clearer insight into the sustainability impact of purchased credits.
  • Offering farmers assurance that regenerative practices deliver recognised, high-integrity credits.
  • Supporting the wider credibility of nature-based offsets and regenerative agriculture.
